Andrew Ely, Executive Director of Project Oceanology, or Project O as they are called will join us in January to talk about the work that they do.  Project Oceanology is a non-profit education and research facility dedicated to nurturing student and public interest and enthusiasm for marine sciences.
Project Oceanology’s mission since 1972 has been to nurture interest and inspire enthusiasm for science and for our planet’s marine environment from our waterfront facility in Groton. Project Oceanology is a year-round, marine science educational organization governed by local school districts and in collaboration with universities and other educational institutions
Project Oceanology’s vision is to be the center of excellence for inquiry, and place-based science and marine education serving the evolving needs of our global community.
Andrew developed his interest in the marine environment while studying Marine Affairs at the
University of Rhode Island. He spent a semester during this period at Sea Education Association, sailing and conducting research on oil pollution aboard the S.S.V. Westward in the Caribbean Sea.
This experience led him to pursue a career in the United States Coast Guard. After 28 years of
service focused on search and rescue, environmental protection, and interagency operations
Andrew joined Project Oceanology in January of 2022. He brings leadership, program
management, and education experience to the team. Andrew received his M.S. from the National
Graduate School in Quality Systems Management, M.A. from the Naval War College in National
Security and Strategic Studies, M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Connecticut, and B.A. in History and Social Science from Thomas Edison State University.
In his spare time, Andrew enjoys spending time with his family, sailing, camping, and volunteering with the Senior Resources Agency on Aging.
